Chapter 6

Tuesday, October 19

Sheriff Carter stood to his feet and stretched, wondering what was going on. It was nearly nine o’clock in the morning and he’d had no frantic citizens rushing in to tell him some kind of chaos had just ensued, with no idea of who the culprit, or culprits were. Oddly enough, this made him even more uncomfortable than the constant bombardment of annoyances. The quiet made him feel, for sure, there was something much larger on the horizon. Knowing the stagecoach was due in today at noon with something of considerable value, probably a cash delivery for the bank, made him that much more uncomfortable.

He shook his head again, making his way to the front door with a loud sigh.

“Is something the matter, Johnathan?” Dawn asked from where she sat on the cot in the open cell. She had been reading but now sat her book aside to stand. Her mother had brought her the book earlier when she had brought the two of them and Matthew breakfast for the morning. She’d thought it would help Dawn pass the time while the sheriff was out taking care of his duties. Duties that, so far this morning he hadn’t had to worry about.

“Yeah,” he huffed, opening the door and leaning his back against one side of the frame and placing his booted foot against the other side, so he could watch the street. “It’s too quiet.”

“Well, isn’t quiet a good thing?” she asked in confusion.

“One might think so,” he answered low enough if she hadn’t stood and moved closer, she might not have heard him.

She walked up beside him, so she could view the same scene he was. “Everything looks like it usually does. See, there’s Pastor Winters heading into the general store, and Mrs. Cranes is out watering her flowers,” she added, pointing in the direction of the boarding house.

He pursed his lips, unable to shake the feeling in the pit of his stomach that told him something was about to happen. “Everyone going about their usual business isn’t enough to prove the chaos is truly over. I’m afraid something worse is about to happen.”

She shrugged, throwing her hands up. “I guess I still don’t understand.”

“Sis, I think what he’s trying to say is, with it being so quiet, one needs to worry about where the ones that were causing all the trouble have gone to. And what they’re up to.”

“Exactly,” Johnathan nodded. “My gut tells me the chaos isn’t really over.”

“Is your gut usually right?” she asked, laying a hand on his forearm.

“It’s what kept me alive the last eight years of my life,” he answered, stepping out onto the boardwalk to call out to the man coming across the street, obviously heading for the café. “Hey, Bayheart, seen anything strange this morning?”

“Nope,” the man answered with a shake of his head. “Seems mighty odd after all the trouble we’ve had the last few days.”

“I agree,” Johnathan mumbled, glancing over the town once again.

“What are you
